Lunar New Year 10 Things To Do And Don’t In Vietnam

For many of us younger Vietnamese, Tet always had been something very important to our families, to our culture and to our people. However, we often don’t understand certain things that the older folks in the family usually say and do during these 3 important days of the Lunar New Year. Just like many of the young Vietnamese living overseas, I have been through the age of wondering and struggling to find out the real stories and reasons behind each activity and behavior that the Vietnamese people do for Tet.You may not agree with some of the believes and traditions that I’m going to list below, but reading this list will save you a lot of headache and hopefully will help you in starting to appreciate the beauty of our Vietnamese culture and traditions:

The 10 Do’s:

1.Say “Happy New Year” in any language that you can when you see a Vietnamese or an Asian person. In Vietnamese, it is “Chuc Mung Nam Moi,” with a big smile!

2.Give red envelopes (Li Xi), though in the old days, only married people were supposed to do this task in the new year because married people were believed to be more successful than single individuals. However, nowadays, giving away Li Xi is an act of showing your generosity and wishing the recipients luck throughout the year. Who doesn’t like getting money from those red envelopes? Because, I DO!

3. Smile, laugh often, and be energetic. Just don’t overdo the smiling and laughing because people may misjudge you as someone recently discharged from an asylum or someone on dope. Nevertheless, seeing someone with a smile on his/her face will brighten the mood of anybody on any day, so definitely do this!

4. Offer others something sweet such as candies or “mut Tet”. People believe that sweet things will bring sweetness for the rest of the year.

5. Offer the elderly a warm cup of tea if they have lost all their teeth or have diabetes. A warm cup of tea is believed to deliver happiness, warmth, and the flavorful sweet taste to the person. Vietnamese families usually gather around during Tet to just drink tea. The tea might not be warm, but love of family is surely warm.

6. Visit all your relatives. This is your golden excuse to visit your relatives and catch up with them. This is my golden excuse to meet the rest of my crowded family members to make sure that that cute chick I’m dating doesn’t happen to be my 5th cousin. (J/K!)

7. Give anything related to number 6 or 8. This is because our culture has been tied with some aspects of Chinese culture. Number 6 in Cantonese sounds like the word “Loc” in Vietnamese, which means Luck. Number 8 in Cantonese sounds like the word “Phat” in Vietnamese, which means Prosperity. I personally don’t believe in these, but I will do anything to make people happy. So, giving $6 or $8 for Li Xi would beat the $10. In the end, I save $2 to $4 for each Li Xi and still make others happy. Nice trick huh?

8. Give anything red in color, such as watermelon, li xi, dried fruits in a red box (mut Tet), etc. The color red is associated with Luckyand High Class rankings in Asian culture, especially the ones that are heavily influenced by Chinese culture.i¿½ In addition, the color red brings warm feelings or hotness, like fire. So in short, red brings luck and warmth to the family.

9. Wear new, colorful, beautiful clothes with light colors. Put those wrinkled, stinky clothes in the washer already!

10. Give the following package of fruits: custard apple, coconut, papaya, and mango. In Vietnamese, the fruits, respectively: Mang Cau, Dua, Du Du, Xo In the Vietnamese Southern accent, the fruits will be pronounced as “Cau Dua Du Xai”, which means “wishing you having enough money to spend”. However, if you read number 4 on the 10 Dont’s List below, you will see that people usually take out the custard apple from the package due to the difficulty of finding it during Tet and the belief that 4 is a bad number. You will often see the package contains only coconut, papaya, and mango, which gives you the combination of “Dua Du Xai”, the truncated version with the meaning of “Enough Money to Spend”.

The 10 Dont’s:

1.Don’t show up at somebody’s house on the 1st day unless you have been invited by the house owner first. Otherwise, go on the 2nd day or at a later time. People believe that the first person who shows up at their house will bring to the family all the characteristics of that person. If a person is a successful person, the family will be successful. If the person has been unlucky last year, the family will be in bad luck all this new year. So it is best for you to stay home until someone has invited you over. It’s their signal of telling you that either someone already has entered their house for this year or they personally like your characteristics to have you over and bring them luck. Believe it or not, I don’t think all this luck stuff is true, but I recommend you to listen to this advice to avoid being unreasonably blamed.

2. Don’t wear dark clothing or just black and white. Dark, black, and white clothing is believed to be associated with death and funerals. By the way, wear something nice and lively-it’s New Year!

3. Don’t swear, curse, trash talk, or argue. Any of these is already bad for any time of the year, not alone the New Year…

4. Don’t give presents with unlucky signs. For example: Any foods with squid or duck meat and number 4 and 7. Squid produces black liquid, which is considered to be dirty and harmful, though the squid itself tastes super good! Ducks are believed to be stupid and their meat is dark (at least darker than chicken meat). Number 4 is pronounced as “Tu” in the old Vietnamese language system which sounds almost like “Tu”, which means Die or Death in the old Vietnamese language that is heavily influenced by the Chinese language. Most people have mistaken the fact of number 7 being a lucky number. However, in old Vietnamese language, 7 is pronounced as “That”, which is the same spelling and same sound as the word “Lost” or “Missing” in old Vietnamese language. So in Vietnamese, number 7 is actually very bad! Not as lucky as you thought. Oh yeah, and if you are in Vietnam, don’t eat or give dog meat during New Year. I’ll tell you the reason in person.

5. Don’t talk about negative topics such as accidents, deaths, or funerals. Who likes to talk about these things anyway?

6. Don’t ask someone to repay you a debt or loan. Wait until the next 2-3 weeks. People believe that if they have to repay or borrow money at the beginning of the year, they will have to borrow and repay money for the rest of the year. Best time of the year to dodge your debt, eh?

7. Don’t ask for “Li Xi” if it was not given. This is considered equivalent to asking the person to pay their debt. In my personal opinion, this has more to do with courtesy and politeness.

8. Don’t visit anyone’s house for the first 3 days of the lunar calendar if you have funeral in your immediate family in the last 3 years. Vietnamese people believe that the dead person in the family will not go to Hell within the first 3 years of his or her death. Their spirit will follow the family members for 3 years before they either get tired from it or witness the fact that the family has gotten over the fact of their death. People don’t want spirits to go into their house during New Year because gods, goddesses, and Buddhas are partying it up during this time and paying less attention in guarding the house of the owners from ghosts and spirits. So, sit home with your beloved spirit; people will come to your house to share your sadness if they are considerate. You do not want to take any stupid blame if some family sheds some blood for something that is totally unrelated to you.

9. Don’t take or ask to take things that are related to fire out of somebody’s house such as: lighters, matches, coals, fire fluid, gas, etc. Fire is considered to be the source of the warmth of the family, the desire of couple’s love. It is believed that families with fire taken away will have problems within the family. Firefighters should take 3 vacation days during Tet if their station happens to be within the Asian neighborhood.

10. Don’t take or ask to take things that are related to water out of somebody’s house such as: bottles of water, water containers, water dispensers, drinking cups, glasses, etc. People usually wish each other “Tai Loc Nhu Nuoc” or “Money and success coming in like water”. So, taking water out of somebody’s house is equivalent to taking away their wealth. If you are thirsty, drink the water inside the house, don’t take the bottle home or you will see the owner coming to your house to take back their waterbottle with an angry face.

Michigan’s growing, problematic financial future, including the decline in automotive industry jobs (not to mention the higher cost of fuel), spells financial insecurity for many Michigan families, making it harder to afford long-distance vacations and high-priced recreational activities enjoyed so much in the past. This has led me to wonder, ‘How do we entertain ourselves and our families and fully enjoy summer break for less money? Better yet, how do we support Michigan’s economy in these tough economic times?’ By enjoying the grass (and water) in our own backyard and partaking in all that our state has to offer.

I have compiled a list of activities that won’t break the bank, and will provide interesting ways to have some fun close to home this summer.

1. Museums. When was the last time you visited a museum? Michigan has wonderful world-class Museums from art to science to history. Standouts include the Detroit Institute of Art (did you know that it is the fifth-largest fine arts museum in the country?), and the Grand Rapids Art Museum. The Detroit Science Center is geared to kids, and offers a host of family-friendly exhibits and galleries, not to mention the astonishing sensory experience of the museum’s IMAX dome theater. Your kids will thank you. Michigan.org is a great resource for finding these museums.

2. Lighthouses. Michigan has more lighthouses than any other state. Bordered by the Great Lakes, the sheer multitude of these historic gems mean they have become an icon for our state, and their tall, slender columns grace everything from our shorelines to picturesque wall calendars. These lighthouses – many of which have been renovated and some which have become public museums – continue to educate and serve as a reminder of our state’s grand maritime history. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit them! If nothing else, you and your family will be treated to nature’s grand brushstrokes of a sweeping, maritime landscape.

3. Beaches. With our abundant coastline, beaches are everywhere in Michigan and easy to love during the humid, late summer months. Some beaches are better than others, and so it’s important to pick the right one. From personal experience, southwest Michigan and northwest Michigan truly offers some of the best beach experiences. South Haven (the magnificent century-old lighthouse still stands at the end of south pier), Grand Haven, St. Joseph, and the Traverse City / Leland areas are home to remarkable beaches. Long stretches of soft, white sand, clean, blue water for swimming and boating, and quaint, lively towns brimming with restaurants, shops, and ice cream parlors make these required destinations!

4. Parks. Take advantage of the many well-maintained and diverse Michigan Metro Parks. Pack a picnic lunch for the day, and don’t forget to pack the s’mores. These wonderful chocolate, marshmallow, gram cracker treats are a must-bring for a Michigander’s picnic feast.

The Michigan Metro Parks provide a myriad of family-fun activities, including swimming, paddle boating, fishing, and loads of scenic picnic settings. And most have paved and wooded trails, making them ideal for hiking, biking, roller blading, and bird watching. Plan to take bats and a ball for a friendly baseball game.

5. Festivals. Michigan offers a variety of outdoor summer festivals which draw people from all walks of life and from all corners of the state; from the cultural (Ann Arbor Arts Fair) to heritage festivals (Holland’s Tulip Time) to national extravaganzas (Traverse City’s National Cherry Festival), and everything in between. 6. Produce Picking – Take Your Pick! I can’t say enough about the produce grown here in Michigan. Across the state, and especially on the west and northwest sides, abundant crops of blueberries, tart cherries, strawberries, peaches, apples and grapes are grown each year. The fruits are then sold at various farmers markets and roadside stands throughout the state. There is nothing like eating farm-fresh fruit (or vegetables for that matter). The sweetness and flavor of the produce is far superior to anything found in your grocery aisle. And since it’s grown locally, it’s fresh!

For the novelty and experience, visit a local fruit farm and pick your own cherries, blueberries, and the like for use now and in the colder months ahead. Bring along the family; children always get a kick out of picking their own fruit and dropping them into pails! It also gives them an appreciation and respect for nature and God’s beautiful creation.

After the harvest, have the family participate in baking something delectable and sweet. Cobblers, crisps, and shortcakes always satisfy during the hot summer months. Or, teach kids to can or package & freeze the fruit for the months ahead (bubbling, tart cherry pies always seem to hit the spot when the weather turns cool).

And one last word of advice: Save the fruit pits! You can have your very own fruit tree if you wrap the pits in moist paper towels until they start to spawn seedlings, and then transfer them to your own back yard!

7. Gardening. Gardening is a great outdoor activity that the whole family can become involved in. The wonderful Michigan summer weather provides optimal planting conditions. It does not matter what size garden you decide to plant – a large vegetable garden or an oversized container garden – it can be very rewarding for the whole family to share in the planting and harvesting of a garden.

To get started, make a trip to the local library and get some good books on the subject. Then, plan your garden – just what kind of plants to plant, and where? Time to visit the nursery to purchase your plants. Get the whole family involved in choosing just the right plants. Make sure everyone has a hand in the planting and caring for the new garden. You may be surprised just how rewarding gardening can be.

8. Family Cookouts. Get family and friends together for a pot luck or backyard barbeque. Plan some fun games for the kids, as well as the adults. Have everyone bring a dish. You will have a virtual feast.

If cooking for yourself and immediate family, find a new and challenging recipe. Experiment with using fresh herbs from the garden to add an earthy, pungent flavor to your meals. Or – next time you’re doing the grocery shopping – give exotic fruits and vegetables a try. My family is partial to sliced mangos, and this fruit pairs especially well with Mexican-inspired fish tacos. Cooking something new can provide not only an activity, but a tasty reward for all who partake in the meal.

9. Scavenger Hunts. Whatever happened to the old-time scavenger hunt? Organize a weekend scavenger hunt with friends. Plan and place your clues, and get that old competitive spirit out, and play to win!

10. Exercise. Get out and start that outdoor exercise program you have been promising yourself since New Year’s Eve. Walk, jog, bike, whatever…Just get out and “do it”! Head into fall with a leaner, more revitalized ‘you’.

11. Crafts. Crafting can add hours of fun for adults and kids alike. Visit a near by Craft store – you will be sure to find many exciting crafting projects for you and your children. Or, you might just have something lying around the house to inspire the imagination. For instance, polish the dust off a collection of miscellaneous seashells and glue them to flower pots, mirrors, unpainted furniture, and wooden boxes to create exquisite nautical treasures. Embellish with sea glass and milky-green coats of paint. The sky’s the limit!

Knitting is also a great craft, and easy to learn. Nowadays, there are so many scrumptious textures and colors of yarn, and so many unique patterns, that knitting as we know it has been completely revitalized! Spend a few afternoon hours teaching a child the rewards of making and wearing something made from the heart and the hands.

12. Reading. Reading can be a luxury for some. People leading hectic, stressful lifestyles may want to just sit back and catch up on some reading. Take that special book out of doors; your yard, the beach, or a great shady park. You might be surprised how much that outdoor setting can make it all the more relaxing.

Speaking of settings, I can’t think of a more appropriate summer book to read than ‘Gift from the Sea’ by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. This poetic piece was written half a century ago by Charles Lindbergh’s wife. Her meditations on life, love, solitude and contentment are made against the oceanic backdrop of Captiva Island (before the loads of tourists) and a tiny, weathered beach cabin. Her muse? None other than the tiny seashells she collected from the beach outside her cabin door. Truly a soul-inspiring read.

I have provided just a few activities that won’t break the bank. Yet these activities will still provide some fun times for you and your loved ones this summer while also supporting Michigan’s economy. Just use your imagination, and I am sure you can come up with many more fun activities that will provide some wonderful summer memories for you, your family and friends.

Patience House and the Shark Lady of the Exumas is an unusual museum and shop located in the home of Gloria Patience. Past 80 years old, she once met the Queen of England, barefoot with shell bead around her ankles. It’s easy to imagine that she held her head just as high then, barefoot before the Queen, as she does now. Rumored to have caught more than 1,500 sharks, she is a formidable character, and presides over the amazing items she has collected through the years with a regal bearing quite her own. Her guided tours through her museum home provide a wealth of historical information and she is a fascinating and warm person.

Another historic site on Great Exuma Island is the Bowe Family Plantation. Today, this former cotton plantation lies in ruins, though in its remains, one can achieve a clear picture of the structural arrangement of the house, including the kitchen and the slave quarters.

Also on Great Exuma Island are two cemeteries of historical importance. One is the Rolle Town Tombs. An overseer and his wife, from the time of slavery, are buried here. There are a couple of interesting bits of island history associated with the surname Rolle. The name arrived on the island in 1783, carried by the slaves that plantation owner Denys Rolle sent from Florida for the cotton plantation he owned, but chose not to reside at. Because slaves were known by the surname of their master and after the Emancipation, many people kept the surnames they’d grown accustomed to, the Rolle name now belongs to more than half of the native population.

The other cemetery, called the Hermitage, dates back to the 1800′s. Located 8 miles away from the capital city of George Town, using a guide will help to get the full effect of this marvelous site.

The vast Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park expands over 176 miles. This nature reserve is a fun and fascinating place, with fine beaches and a wide variety of wildlife. It has also played an important role in local nature conservation efforts.

The islands are wonderful for exploring underwater, with many caves and reefs for snorkeling and diving and there are many day tour packages available for these activities. Chartered boats for fishing excursions are also available, and at reasonable rates.

The Exuma Islands are an excellent vacation destination. This area truly demonstrates the very best of Bahaman qualities.

The Racking Horse was proclaimed to be Alabama’s State horse in 1975 and is a naturally gaited horse known for its beauty, stamina, and calm disposition that originated on the great southern plantations before the Civil War. Plantation owners cherished the breed for its smooth, easy, natural-born gait. It was a horse that could be ridden comfortably for hours, allowing the great distances between and on the great plantations to be covered painlessly. The name “Racking” comes from the term “rack” which was the rural country word for the single-foot gait.

The Racking Horse has its origins rooted deeply from within the ranks of the Tennessee Walking Horse, and this explains much about the breed. Some people have debated whether or not the Racking Horse is a stand-alone breed, but the designation of “breed” was given to the Racking Horse by the USDA in 1978. So what is the difference between a walking horse and a racking horse? Well, the major difference is the gait. Racking Horses only allow one foot to strike the ground at a time. The Tennessee Walking Horse, on the other hand, generally performs three distinct gaits – the flat-foot walk, the running walk, or the canter. They can also rack, but this is not a desirable gait. So, simply put, the Racking Horse breed began from Tennessee Walking Horses that rack naturally.

The movement to form the breed known as the Racking Horse was started when a group of Alabama horsemen, who were involved with the Tennessee Walking Horse, split off from the parent club. The primary reasons were economical and political so a carefully studied program for getting the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to legally designate the Racking Horse as a distinct breed began in the late 1960′s.

When the USDA Horse Protection Act went into effect in 1971, which targets the practice of soring within the Tennessee Walking Horse industry, many people in the Tennessee Walking Horse breed opted to get away from the problems that were plaguing the Tennessee Walker breed. On May 23, 1971, the USDA recognized the Racking Horse Breeders’ Association of America, thereby allowing a registry to be established to perpetuate the Racking Horse breed. Prior to the formation of the RHBAA, the Racking Horse had been the only horse in the show rings of the nation that was not protected by a registry or a uniform set of rules, even though the Racking Horse breeders could have formed an association at any time prior to 1971 for the purpose of registering horses and creating that set of rules, just like all other U.S. horse breeding associations before them.

The primary function of the Racking Horse Breeders’ Association was to establish a registry to protect, preserve, and perpetuate the breed in a natural state with little or no artificial devices to enhance its natural-born gait and to ensure that the horse’s tail is naturally raised without nicking. But some show classes, such as open shod divisions, still allow special shoes that enhance action and a new class allows the use of chains, 6 ounces and under as action devices. Horses entered in these classes wear either flat pads or wedge pads made of leather, plastic or other pliant material on their front feet. Weighted shoes are also allowed, the purpose of which is to provide an artificial extension to the hoof and to encourage the horse to lift its feet higher in the show ring. The RHBAA has laid out strict edicts covering the size and thickness of the pads and also addresses the issue of soring, stating “Abusive treatment and/or training techniques designed to produce an alteration of the gaits shall not be condoned.” Racking Horses are also subject to the DQP (Designated Qualified Person) inspections as outlined in the Horse Protection Act, as are Tennessee Walking Horses and Saddlebreds.

One banned practice is the application of caustic chemicals just above the hoof, in a process known as “soring,” which gets its name from the fact that a horse alters its gait due to discomfort or sore feet. Soring, however is also seen within the Racking horse world even though it is illegal under the Horse Protection Act, and is a federal offense within the United States.

The Racking Horse is attractive and gracefully built with a long sloping neck, full flanks, well boned, smooth legs, and finely textured hair. The breed is considered to be a light horse, averages 15.2 hands high and weighs 1,000 pounds. It comes in many colors such as black, bay, sorrel, chestnut, brown, gray, yellow, cremello, buckskin, dun, palomino, roan, champagne, and even spotted. Spotted Racking Horses are often dual-registered with the National Spotted Saddle Horse Association NSSHA as well as with the RHBAA. Some Racking Horse events are now offering classes specifically for spotted horses, although the coloration is also permitted in regular classes and is commonly seen.

The gaits performed by the Racking Horse are the same on the trail ride and in the show ring. The breed is shown under saddle, in hand or in harness, either flat shod or with pads. The rack is a fast, evenly timed, bi-lateral four-beat gait in which each foot strikes the ground separately at equal intervals which is neither a pace nor a trot. It is often called single foot because only one foot strikes the ground at a time. There is no head nod, but the shoulders and hindquarters are very active. The horse appears to jump from one foot to the other and there is some overstride in the gait, but not as much as in the running walk. It is similar to the running walk of the Tennessee Walking Horse, but with more collection in the Racking Horse’s movement. The ride is so smooth that the rider appears to remain motionless as the horse racks. It is not the same as the show gait of other breeds in which the “rack” is an artificially achieved gait resulting from special training, though soring does illegally occur within the Racking Horse breed.

Eligibility for registration is determined upon the performance of the gaits natural to the breed, and in the beginning horses of all ages could be registered by gait performances. Horses are registered by inspection by a qualified licensed RHBAA commissioner to determine if the horse is capable of performing the rack, but all horses born in 1994 and after must be blood-typed to be registered.

The Racking Horse has an unusual friendliness and affectionate nature toward humans. It is intelligent with a willingness to learn, an eagerness to work and an ability to perform in more than one function. Beginning riders cherish the smooth gait and the calm temperament while veteran horsemen admire its beauty and versatility from the work field to the show ring.

There are 80,000 Racking Horses registered by the RHBAA throughout the United States and several foreign countries, but Tennessee and Alabama have the largest number of Racking Horses in the United States. At this rate, it won’t be long before the Racking Horse is a common sight in show rings throughout the equine world.

Alternative decking is a booming business. The composite and pvc (polyvinyl chloride) decking industry has grown by leaps and bounds. Companies market the benefits as low maintenance, green (eco-friendly), long lasting and durable. They offer a different choice to wood that sounds new and exciting. But is it too good to be true? Purchasing a product that is made from recycled milk jugs or water bottles sounds like the environmentally sound thing to do (even at 30 percent or more increase to other comparable materials). Low maintenance is the main selling point for pvc decking but at what cost? Let’s look at some of the details that these companies fail to address.

Composite decking will typically contain a plastic resin (many times with recycled content) and a wood fiber (example sawdust or wood chips) in addition to other additives. There are many different types of plastic decking with varying mixes and types of plastic but they all originate from petroleum, one of the two top sources of carbon dioxide emissions. They also use fossil fuels in the manufacturing and transporting processes for these products. Unfortunately some of the companies have added fiberglass to assist in improving the strength, durability and performance of the composite deck boards. Fiberglass has been linked with pulmonary lung disease and cancer and can have similar effects to the body as asbestos does. In a report released by the Healthy Building Network, only 15 out of 55 plastic decking companies produced a product with 50 percent and greater post consumer content and only one polyethylene. Plastic decking with more than one polyethylene will be more difficult to recycle effectively. So those 15 were more readily recyclable. The problem with recycling plastic lumber is that most of the recycling facilities are not equipped to handle recycling the plastic lumber. This is because the additives and resins cannot be recycled. The result? Composite decking, despite claiming to be eco-friendly, will still end up in a landfill.

PVC decking is a completely unsustainable product. PVC is made from the vinyl chloride monomer, a known human carcinogen. The production, use and disposal of this material release persistent pollutants that cause both acute and chronic health hazards. The problem is you don’t see it but it travels into the air, water and land and lingers long after exposure. This invisible poison was declared a contaminant by the Association of Post Consumer Plastics Recyclers in 1998. It actually interferes with recycling other plastics. There are documented facts that it causes cancer, impairs reproduction, causes birth defects, damages the brain, etc. The list goes on and on. Unfortunately many people don’t know this and what you can’t see, can sometimes hurt you. Low maintenance is the main selling feature of this product but at what cost? Is your family’s health worth it? It definitely is not recyclable, eco-friendly or healthy to use it. A common complaint is the boards getting so hot as to cause blisters on your feet. This material can be easily replaced by other materials. Don’t expose yourself or your environment to this toxic pollutant.

Alternative decking will continue to grow but we need to be educated on what it is and what it isn’t. Sometimes what is new and exciting isn’t better than what you originally had. Wood is still the number one product for decking. Decking products such as ipe decking, tigerwood, cumaru, and garapa have benefits that far outweigh both composite and PVC vinyl decking. They are all 100 percent natural and require no chemicals to resist termites, mold, and decay. The competition has gotten bigger but I feel this has benefited the lumber industry by increasing awareness of how to keep our forests sustainable and utilizing what we have to the best of our abilities. Nothing will compete with the natural beauty and recyclability of wood.
